I thought I was doing it all right. I left for the airport two hours before my flight, which was just a quick hop to Shanghai. On any other day I would have checked in one hour before my plane left.
There was a rainstorm on the way to the airport. A huge rainstorm. Shortly after entering the airport stretch of the airport expressway we hit a traffic jam. Well, more like a parking lot. Nobody was moving. Worse yet, nobody was driving past on the other side of the road. The driver asked what time my plane was and I told him. We still had more than an hour until my departure, so he confidently replied that I shouldn't worry. I didn't. Thirty minutes and maybe 100 meters later I started to worry. Reports came in via the radio that the road ahead of us was flooded and nobody could cross. We moved a bit further down the road and into the airport proper. Traffic was being routed through part of the tarmac. We pulled up to the gate at my departure time. Very had been telling me not to worry, because my plane was probably delayed. I wasn't listening. I looked at the departure board and it said "gate closed" for my plane. My heart sunk. I went to a check-in counter to try and inquire about my flight, not yet ready to believe that I had missed it. They gave me more of the same. I couldn't check in. We then went to a ticket counter to see what could be done with my ticket. Not much. For the small price of $1400 USD I can leave tomorrow on the same flight, in business class. Or for the slightly more reasonable price of $400 USD, I can leave on the 9th. I still don't have a ticket. I need to call American Airlines first and try to get my US ticket refunded before it's too late. Then I'll figure something out. I'm tired. I'm sick of this fucking country and I want to leave. This is not the first time the transportation system has fucked me in this country. The trains are fucked. The roads are fucked. The planes are fucked. Please, somebody make it stop. Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be fine in a few hours.
