From no movies in two months to three movies in three nights...

While Yeomen was in progress I never felt like I had the time to sit down and watch a movie.  So, the same three movies from Netflix sat on my shelf for two months, nagging at me.  It's not like I really never had the time, but I have to be in the right mood.

Anyway, some quick impressions:
A Scanner Darkly - I don't read plot synopses or even really look at trailers much anymore, so I kind of expected this to be another Waking Life, so when it turned out to have a plot (and a good one, too!) I was pleasantly surprised.  I didn't know anybody in this one, unlike Waking Life, but there is a brief appearance by Jason Douglas, who does voices for ADV and whom I've seen do live theatre here, so there's still that sense of personal connection.  I'm keeping this one for a while in the hopes I can get some of my friends to watch it with me.

Casino Royale - I've basically got two things to say about this, both somewhat hyperbolic: one, this has got to be the best written, directed and acted Bond movie EVAR, and two, Eva Green is the hottest and most beautiful woman on the planet and just where the hell has she been hiding all these years?

Gattaca - this one was a repeat for me, but it had been so long since I'd seen it last that I'd forgotten a lot of it.  It was interesting to see Jude Law slumming with Ethan Hawke, but then realize that this was his first US film and so he hadn't become THE Jude Law yet.  Also, much was made in the special features of just how low-budget the film was and how that forced them to make certain choices about the visual style.  In the end I think it makes for a better movie.  I'm somewhat skeptical that in the future we're all going to be living in beautiful spacious oceanside houses, but who knows?

Last Saturday saw the birth of TRASG0's daughter.  He called me about ten minutes after the fact, I think.  Powerful set of lungs on that kid for sure.  I need to get up there sometime soon and see them.

I sort of enjoyed our little "snow day" here in Houston on Tuesday, even though I had to work from home (building closed) instead of just having the day off.  Lots of people are making fun of the local media coverage of the storm, saying that it was completely overblown.  (Hah!)  Better safe than sorry, I think.

i was underwhelmed, but whatever.  i worked from home and didn't have to deal with my regular shit-bag commute, so i was pretty happy with it.  and we didn't have to water the lawn.  score!

You live too far from the coast by riceowlguy (4.00 / 1) #2 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 08:25:45 AM EST
What suburb you live in makes a huge difference in terms of storm threat, which is probably the number one reason why Katy, Cypress and the Woodlands are the rich suburbs and Pearland, Clear Lake and Baytown are the poor suburbs, in overall terms.

I live right in the middle and I after my Rita experience I don't think I'd evacuate for ANYTHING.

the difference being by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #5 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 10:03:07 AM EST
Rita was a pretty strong hurricane, Eduard was a tropical storm.  The difference is not subtle.

When I said "know" by riceowlguy (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 12:45:35 PM EST
I meant "I know this person in real life and have occasionally hung out and had coffee with said person."  Waking Life had a guy I knew from my camera store days in Austin, David Jewell, credited as "Man Talking To Caveh".  I should have been more explicit there.

Gattaca by duxup (4.00 / 1) #6 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 10:09:13 AM EST
Great film.

As for the future we only saw one or two scenes for what might be "normal" people's lives.  Otherwise the film is just from the perspective of the made men's lives, or at least those living like them.

Casino Royale . . . by slozo (4.00 / 1) #14 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 02:04:02 PM EST
. . . best Bond movie ever, to be sure. And, the truest to Fleming's original character and feel . . . can't wait for the next one. An excellent action/thriller/drama movie made in the midst of a huge morass of shitty films that are lauded for unknown reasons . . .

Also, Gattaca is one of my old faves as well . . . I like the cut of your jib.
