Two things: by blixco (4.00 / 1) #1 Mon Jul 31, 2006 at 08:10:00 AM EST
  1. My mom's dad, a very cool old guy from the bayous of Louisiana, used to grind his own meat for sausage and for ground beef.  His meat grinder was close to the same color and structure as the one pictured, except his had an inverse-bvell-shaped hopper. Normally when we'd visit them, it was at night or evening...our whole family would go out to eat on Friday night, then stop by their house and hang out until all us kids were comatose.  On very rare occassions, we'd go by in the blinding light of day.  The house seemed alien in the daylight; smaller and so much more mundane.  But inevitably my grandfather would be doing something involving food that would sicken the hardiest of non-white-trash stomachs, so I got this idea that, hey, this is what they do all day: my grandfather makes anduille or venison sausage or guts catfish or cleans frogs for fried froglegs, and my grandmother...well, she's a whol 'nother story, but she was normally well into her first vodka by noon.  It was like this bizarro-world versionb of my childhood, where any second I'd turn a corner and see the daylight version of me, all pasty and terrified.
  2. One of my clients in Framingham, Mass. was a mincemeat factory.  They made mincemeat and other meat pies, tinned meat, potted meat products, and gelatin.  I'd go there, work for an afternoon amongst the steamy entrails on, say, the Novell 3.12 server that was on the killing floor (in a back office, mind you), then back up, go to my car, drive back to Southboro and go to a carwash, clean the greasy mess off of my car, my hands, and my boots, and go back to work a confirmed vegan.

I didn't think anyone would have anything to write about this one; it's hardly the most controversial photo in the world.  It's excellent to read these sorts of reminisces.

This mincer is in la Pedrera, an apartment building in Barcelona designed by Gaudi (apologies for the lack of proper accents). There is a historical apartment there, containing furniture and accessories of the time of the 1920s. This was clamped onto the marble worktop in the kitchen.

wordy lately.

Spain is one of those places I can see myself living, but I think eventually I'll end up back in New Mexico, wife working for some university, me working to turn high desert into garden.
