You should be AT the airport 2 hours in advance by BadDoggie (2.00 / 0) #1 Mon Jul 31, 2006 at 07:53:56 AM EST
Especially when you're depending on admittedly shaky infrastructure to get you there.

If staying another 10 days costs more than around $800, take the business class seat and consider it a $200 upgrade because you're going to eat the rest of the cost of staying anyway

What's so bad about staying another week? Your diaries didn't really give me the impression of loathing the place.

woof.

OMG WE'RE FUCKED! -- duxup ?

Well, there are many nice things about living in China. I still believe that.

But... (and this is a very large but) China wears on you. You tend to encounter assholes at a much higher rate here than anywhere else. I don't know why this is. Read talk talk china. Everything there is truth.

Good luck.  If you need the combined superpowers of HuSi, just send up a flare and we'll, I dunno, wire a ton of cash to your location, and maybe a gruntled Scotsman as well.

that will get you out of the country real quick.

Well, out of public view, anyway.

If only it were that easy.. I honestly considered doing something worthy of deportation today. I'm pretty sure you still have to pay for your plane ticket though.

Get a hold of your airline. by calla (4.00 / 1) #8 Tue Aug 01, 2006 at 12:54:51 AM EST
They can do things in customer service that the counter folks can't.

I just got a travel voucher for being stuck on a plane on the tarmac for over three hours. It took at least six phone calls and one trip to the airport, but it's worth it.

Keep calling - complain about the storm, traffic, etc. It wasn't your fault - it was an act of God. Ask for managers and managers until you get someone that can help.

You'll find a flight.

EU carriers are obliged to offer redress for that kind of delay (2 hours) so I wouldn't be surprised at any airline coughing up on that. Missing a flight through your 'own fault' alas is not something they normally care about.

Worth a shot at getting someone sympathetic though or turning up on standby.

Bad assumption by weihan (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Aug 01, 2006 at 06:29:32 AM EST
You advice is only valid in countries with a concept of customer service. China is not one of those countries.

Also, it's really hard to yell at people in a second language that I only have a basic knowledge of.

Anyhow, it's taken care of now. I went and got a new ticket today for only $150 US. Now I just have to figure out what to do for the next two weeks.

I lived in Taiwan. by calla (2.00 / 0) #11 Tue Aug 01, 2006 at 10:19:38 AM EST
It's not like I don't know Chinese culture, although customer service is a concept understood in Taipei, unlike red China.

Weren't you dealing with an American company?

I flew over on a cheap open-ended ticket. All told, my round trip flight expenses aren't that expensive, there's just been a lot of hassle.
